Key performance indicators and the strategic goals of the organization

Every company that wants to achieve success and develop a leadership position in the market should effectively achieve both the company’s vision and its defined objectives. However, in order to be able to actually measure the degree to which the strategic objectives are being achieved, it is advisable to apply the so-called Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). KPIs allow for monitoring the efficiency and effectiveness of the most important processes in an organization. Additionally, they are an invaluable tool facilitating decision-making in a company.

Effective business management through the use of KPIs

As a rule, key performance indicators are an extremely important part of business management. KPIs allow you to control the current “health” of your organization. Indicators also allow you to evaluate and measure the performance of specific areas within your company. Key performance indicators are also designed to facilitate strategic decision-making in key areas of an organization’s operations. Not only do they support processes aimed at the continuous improvement of a company, but they also allow for the most efficient use of resources possessed by a given company. Which can directly translate to financial improvements within the organization.

Indicator categories

There are several categories of indicators that can act as KPIs. For example, these will include indicators related to:

  • Quality of products or services (number of complaints, number of non-conforming products).
  • Operational management (production volume, OEE, amount of waste optimization).
  • Finance (sales value, ROE, NPV).
  • Human resources management (employee turnover rate, absenteeism, Time-to-Hire, or average time to recruit a candidate).
  • Occupational safety (number of accidents at work).
  • Logistics (lead time, delivery completeness, transportation costs, on-time delivery, inventory turnover).
  • Marketing (cost of acquiring a lead, number of new newsletter subscriptions, number of inquiries from the website)
  • Customer service (First Contact Resolution – FCR, Consumer Satisfaction Score, Average Wait Time).

Key performance indicators – benefits to the organization

Key performance indicators make it possible to determine not only whether previously set goals are being properly achieved, but also whether nothing is threatening their fulfillment. An important advantage of KPIs in this case is that the company can identify a specific problem in time. Then, by finding the right solution to that problem, it can effectively address it and address the threat. KPIs also provide an indication of the stage at which specific objectives are being met. They provide information to the management whether the company is developing in the right direction.
Setting key performance indicators can help a company achieve both operational and strategic goals. They allow you to plan and prioritize specific activities. KPIs also make it easier to make quick decisions and respond if anything goes wrong. Their advantage is also the fact that they have a very good impact on the organizational culture of the company. This is because their use makes employees thoroughly familiar with their duties and the method of measuring their work. This, in turn, can go a long way in improving the efficiency not only of processes but also of employees. Many employees need to participate in decision-making and influence the direction of the business, so it’s important that employees know KPIs, how to calculate them, and how to interpret their results.

KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) are also one of the key elements of effective quality management.
